The fertile valley trapped between these stone walls hosts a treasure trove of biodiversity. From the comfort of our panoramic cars we watch the change of vegetation and landscape as we slowly climb the Andean highlands to Urbina, the highest point in our itinerary at 11,800 feet above sea level. In the skirts of mount Chimborazo we meet the last ice-merchant and learn the story of his ancestral trade.

We visit Guamote market, one of the last indigenous markets in the Andes, before continuing south towards the mythical Devil’s Nose pass. A vertiginous descent of 450metres zig zag takes us from the Andean highlands down towards the coastal plains.

We continue our descent along the narrow Chanchán river gorge and crossing an impressive cloud forest towards the temperate city of Bucay.

The greatness of this tour does not rely only on the prime experiences it offers, but also on the model of social co-responsibility it holds, in which local communities and natural heritage are at the heart of the experience. Together with the license-holders of our 23 station-cafes, 14 artisanal squares, 13 local museums, 2 lodges, 9 folklore and historical recreation groups and several community-based tourism operations, Tren Ecuador’s big family of workers and strategic allies allows tourists to experience first- hand the rich natural and cultural heritage of Ecuador while creating value for local communities.

For these reasons, in 2016 Tren Ecuador won the World Responsible Tourism Awards at WTM London, and took the Gold in the ‘Best for Poverty Reduction & Inclusion’ category sponsored by the Tobago Tourism Board, impressed for reversing the traditional approach of heritage and luxury train travel.
